The Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick

“Discover the path to infinity”

Review by Fiona Newcombe

The Ghosts of Heaven inspires a timeless, beautiful and haunting tale connecting the world around us through an ancient symbol; the spiral.

Marcus Sedgwick creates the intriguing tale through four subsections: the Song, the Whisper, the Witch and the Hell. The use of these subsections allows the reader to personalise and manufacture their own story, each establishing a different way of thinking. The genius of allowing the reader to create their own story makes this an enchanting read, combining myth, history and philosophy which, at first, seem an unlikely mixture however definitely succeeds in creating this seemingly timeless piece.

The novel is divided into four main sections: the first being historical, based around a young woman during what can only be described as a prehistoric era.

The second section possessing a more mythical factor, based on a woman living through the era of witch-hunting. The third is rather more modern, following a man and his daughter living within the confines of a mental asylum; and the fourth being futuristic, set in space with a man who finds himself to have split personalities. Marcus Sedgwick's book explores the never ending spiral of life, telling the reader that you don’t need two hearts and be a time-lord to travel through space and time!

The Ghosts of Heaven, as Buzz Lightyear would say, takes the reader

“To infinity and beyond!”
